OS ENTERRAMENTOS NO CEMITÉRIO DE SARILHOS GRANDES DEPOIS DAS ESCAVAÇÕES ARQUEOLÓGICAS DE 2008 E 2020

Nas duas campanhas de escavação desenvolvidas em 2008 e 2020 no cemitério do adro da igreja de Sarilhos Grandes foi escavado um total de 41 enterramentos e 13 ossários. Devido à quantidade de ossos recuperados em alguns dos ossários, foi escavado um número mínimo de 204 indivíduos, pelo menos 44 não adultos e 160 adultos.

E como foi o ritual de enterramento dos 41 indivíduos escavados? Tal como é norma católica, a grande maioria (39 dos 41) foi enterrada em decúbito dorsal (deitados sobre as suas costas), enquanto duas crianças com menos de 4 anos foram enterradas em decúbito lateral esquerdo. A maioria dos enterramentos estava orientada com a cabeça para oeste e os pés para este, enquanto dois estavam orientados este-oeste e cinco norte-sul. Finalmente, a maioria dos enterramentos foi realizada em covacho aberto direitamente nas areias locais e apenas dois enterramentos parecem ter sido realizados em caixão.

BURIALS AT THE CHURCHYARD OF SARILHOS GRANDES AFTER THE 2008 AND 2020 ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS

A total of 41 burials and 13 ossuaries were excavated in both archaeological excavations carried out in 2008 and 2020 at the churchyard of Sarilhos Grandes. Due to the number of bones recovered in some of the ossuaries, a minimum number of 204 individuals was excavated, at least 44 nonadults and 160 adults.

And how was the burial ritual of the 41 individuals excavated? The majority (39 out of 41) was buried lying on their backs, while two children under 4 years of age were buried lying on their left side, slightly flexed. Most burials were oriented with the head to the west and the feet to the east, whereas two were oriented east-west and five were oriented north-south. Finally, most of the deceased were placed in a pit directly on the ground, while only two individuals were buried in a coffin.
