A FRATURA ÓSSEA NO CEMITÉRIO DE SARILHOS GRANDES

Hoje trazemos três exemplos de diferentes tipos de fraturas ósseas provenientes do cemitério da Igreja de São Jorge de Sarilhos Grandes (todos provenientes do ossário 7): uma fratura no nariz e duas no membro inferior direito, aparentemente todas de diferentes indivíduos (ver imagens).

Uma fratura óssea consiste na quebra completa ou incompleta da continuidade do osso. A fratura nasal (principalmente nos ossos nasais, como acontece no exemplo que trazemos) é bastante comum em populações do passado e foram identificadas algumas nos indivíduos escavados no cemitério de Sarilhos Grandes. As causas relacionadas com a fratura nasal podem ser normalmente divididas entre violência interpessoal e causas acidentais. No caso apresentado na imagem essa distinção não é possível ser feita. Para além disso, a fratura encontra-se completamente remodelada, o que está de acordo com o facto de este tipo de fraturas estar raramente associada à causa de morte.

Quanto às fraturas da perna direita, a do fémur parece ter sido a mais grave, uma vez que a remodelação não resultou no alinhamento do osso no local anatómico correto. Isto terá resultado da ausência de cuidados médicos e, muito possivelmente, em dificuldades na locomoção para o resto da vida do indivíduo. Apesar da aparente falta de cuidados médicos, não terão faltado outro tipo de cuidados básicos a este indivíduo por outros membros da comunidade. De outra forma não seria fácil ter sobrevivido a fratura tão limitativa no membro inferior.

BONE FRACTURE IN THE CHURCHYARD OF SARILHOS GRANDES

Today we present three exemples of different types of bone fractures from the churchyard of Sarilhos Grandes (all from ossuary 7): a fracture in the nasal bones and two in the right lower limb (see images).

A bone fracture consists of a complete or incomplete break in the continuity of the bone. Nasal fractures (particularly in the nasal bones) are common in populations of the past and several were identified in the individuals excavated in the churchyard of Sarilhos Grandes. Causes related to isolated nasal fracture can usually be divided into interpersonal violence and acidental causes. Unfortunately, in the case shown in the image below this distinction cannot be made. Moreover, the fracture is completely remodelled, which is in accordance with the fact that this type of fracture is rarely associated with the cause of death.

Regarding the fractures of the right lower limb, the one reported in the femur seems to have resulted in the most serious consequences, since the remodelling did not result in the correct anatomical alignment of the bone. This may have been consequence of the lack of medical care and may have resulted in permanent difficulties in locomotion for the rest of the individual’s life. Nevertheless, the complete bone remodelling show that he has survived for a long time after his death. Despite the apparent lack of medical care, provision of basic care by other members of the community seems to have been a reality, as it is easy to imagine for such a limiting fracture in the lower limb.
