Neste ano de 2021 haverá novos Censos, uma prática que remonta ao século XIX (o primeiro data oficialmente de 1864) e que procura fazer um levantamento geral da população portuguesa. Contudo, o primeiro recenseamento do país iniciou-se no final da década de 1520, no reinado de D. João III. Às terras pertencentes às ordens militares, como as da Ordem de Santiago, na Margem Sul do Tejo, os oficiais régios só chegaram em 1532. Assim, sabemos que neste momento viviam em Sarilhos Grandes entre 198-221 habitantes, num total de 46 núcleos familiares (aplicando um coeficiente entre 4.3 e 4.8 habitantes por fogo), bem como 1 mulher solteira e 1 clérigo. É a mais antiga referência do número de habitantes deste lugar. Em comparação, na mesma altura, o Montijo, então Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo, teria entre 456 e 509 habitantes.

In this year of 2021, a new census will be made in Portugal. This is a procedure which started in this country during the 19th century (the first official one took place in 1864), and that consists in systematically enumerating the population of the country. However, the first census within the Portuguese realm begun by the end of the 1520s, during the reign of king João III. The officials only reached the lands belonging to the military orders in 1532, such as the ones own by the Order of Santiago, on the Southern margin of the Tagus river. Thus, we know that, by that time, there were between 198 – 221 people living in Sarilhos Grandes, making a total of 46 households (according to a coefficient of 4.3-4.8 individuals per household), plus 1 single woman and 1 priest. This is the oldest record regarding population size for this place. Comparing numbers, Montijo (at the time called Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo) had between 456-509 people.
