HISTÓRIAS DE SARILHOS

A investigação histórica passa também pela análise de mapas antigos, que permitem compreender a evolução geográfica do espaço. Neste caso, partilhamos a região de Sarilhos Grandes do mapa da península de Setúbal, da autoria do engenheiro do exército José Maria das Neves Costa, realizado entre 1813-1816.

Aqui podemos observar a estrutura urbana de Sarilhos, as estradas que aí existem, bem como parte da ocupação do seu solo. Assinalámos a verde as zonas de pinhais, a roxo as vinhas, a castanho as terras lavradas, e a azul as marinhas de sal, conforme estão identificadas na legenda do mapa.

Lembremos que as análises laboratoriais feitas aos indivíduos enterrados e estudados a partir da intervenção arqueológica de 2008 já comprovaram o consumo de feijão, grão-de-bico, trigo e batata. Estes resultados serão agora comparados com o estudo dos novos achados na campanha de 2020.

A interpretação comparada destes dados com a documentação escrita permite assim avaliar melhor a evolução de Sarilhos Grandes e das suas gentes ao longo dos séculos.

Sarilhos Stories

Historical research also encompasses the analysis of old cartography, which makes it possible to understand the geographic evolution of the overall space. In this case, we share Sarilhos Grandes’ region on this map of the Setúbal peninsula, drawn by an army engineer, José Maria das Neves Costa, produced between 1813-1816.

Here we can observe the urban structure of Sarilhos, the existing roads, as well as part of the occupation of its lands. We marked the pine forests with green, vineyards as purple, farmlands as brown, and salt marines with blue, as identified in the caption of the map.

Let us recall that the laboratory analyses carried out on individuals buried and studied from the 2008 archaeological intervention have already proved the consumption of beans, chickpeas, wheat, and potatoes. These results will now be compared with the study of the new findings from the 2020 campaign.

The comparative interpretation of this information with the historical documentation thus allows us a better assessment of the evolution of Sarilhos Grandes and its people over the centuries.
